As my experience, do max stage during tournament will be safe, but not too aggressive, 200~500 stages ahead 2nd player is good.
I tried 1k ahead once, but not dare to do it again, other player may report you if they get mad.

During normal day, just hold your ms, can increase below 2digit ms for each prestige.

Looking at this reply..i'm wandering how much do you guys push your max stage per prestige? 100,200,300 stages?

It doesn't work like that. The relics you are seeing are only visual, as all relics and artifacts are server sided.
