Okay so, just to clear things up for me, to avoid ban, i should only use it on story, and gear dungeons, etc, and not use the mod on leaderboards nor pvp. Or is pvp a no overall? Like, once you cheat you avoid pvp at all costs?

Yes I would avoid pvp. I have been using mod on story, dungeons, etc... and legit on pvp. So far haven't gotten a single ban. You can use mod on leaderboards event but avoid placing high up on the leaderboards.

Just don't use it on PVPs or leaderboard events. With some common sense you can prolong not getting banned.
