actually you just need to upgrade enough until you can buy other artifact, I don't think beyond upgrade beyond max is good, on my case I just upgrade it to maxed level

Every artifact who give you p.atk to all heroes, also artifact who give frenzy, artifact who give ms speed, etc. If an artifact give u 1M % p.atk. so u can slain boss guild easily. But only on guild who tolerate to modded player

If you only use the artifact leveler to max out your artifacts to their max level and not something crazy like im seeing, do you still need to keep the free artifacts checked each time or is it changed on game side and can play unmodded again?

You can use original apk, but don't ever open artifacts tab, otherwise your artifacts will only capped at max lvl, and not exceeds max lvl.

2nd advice is to buy event artifact and upgrade to high then sell it for more materials.
Important note : when upgrading Astro Head Start not more than 100% very high ban rate
