So im not crazy? Without shift the games pointless right?

You can't level down which means you dont get access to better equipment, and you can't level up so at some point you will just get stuck. It is enough to beat up most mobs but you wont be able to beat any bosses (which wont even let you level down since those loses lead to a bad end instead)
