ETA: I dont think HP is as competitive as it used to be. These days, players mostly just grab whatever rewards they can while playing, and with the recent trends, the rewards aren't as appealing as before (outfits or furniture sets). The risk is still there, and I'm not encouraging it, but if you want to push the main story, it's better to progress your game a day before the event ends.
Until someone figures out how to completely avoid MP events, you can do what I do (and some of us): hold off on updating the game. Usually, you won’t get new events two versions behind the latest. You might miss out on events and new TLSQs won't appear right away, but you can still play them later once you've caught up. They'll annually trigger past TLSQs, except Quidditch. It's a good approach if you just want to focus on progressing through the main storyline or Quidditch.
