It does work, you should install default obb first and let the game update then overwrite obb with the one you downloaded with the modded apk.

I installed the normal game first, copied that obb somewhere. Then uninstalled normal game and installed the modded apk with the obb I copied. Then when the game updates (I think it's like 30mb) I close the game and replaced the obb with the one that's modded.
